Best Burgers in Seoul

BurgersSeoul is a city famed for many things, but burgers?  What if I need a proper burger?!?   Not to fear burger-aficionados, this town has a quality list of places not likely to disappoint.

Brooklyn Burger

A Brooklyn-esque setting, some 90’s hip-hop in the background, and oh what is this? The best darn burger in town!  Slow expansion hasn’t dimmed demand, but any wait you experience is likely worth it.  The 7 ounce C.R.E.A.M. burger is excellent (with great naming respect provided to the Wu-Tang Clan), but basically you can’t go wrong with any burger you choose.  Milk shakes are also quite good, with the mint chocolate chip being a favorite.

Gilbert’s Burger & Fries

This non-pretentious burger spot provides a solid burger-munching ambiance. Some say it’s a bit of a Brooklyn burger clone (I’ve heard of worse things), but whatever it is, this place is delicious.  A  7 ounce Sunrise or (and/or) Mr. President and a cold Great White to wash it down, and you should find yourself in a good spot. Veggies also tasted quite fresh.

Libertine Bar & Kitchen

A standard burger joint? Absolutely not. But that doesn’t mean this place doesn’t cook up a mean one.  Lamb burger for-the-win!  Provides a bit of a Lower East Side Manhattan feel (minus the LES cramped spaces). Quality establishment all around (the other food is terrific too) with well crafted cocktails.

Left Coast

Great brews,  friendly staff and you guessed it,  delicious burgers!  There are a number of excellent choices, but give the legendary John Wayne a chance to win your heart. Fries aren’t too shabby either.

Fire Bell

This little burger shop packs a punch! No literally, the Habana burger nearly lit my face on fire, but I couldn’t put it down.  The Rookie burger is probably a safe debut into their quality.  While the burgers are not huge in size, they make up for it by packing a lot of flavor.  Service is also very fast – they basically start grilling your burger immediately. An all-around win.

This place is all sorts of goodness. Very tasty burgers covered by a signature soft potato bun. An assortment of fries to choose from as well, with a great variety of less-than-healthy toppings.  Wash it down with a selection of cold beers, or if you have a bit of a sugar craving, a cotton candy margarita. Green Monster or Captain America should steer you right.

Butcher’s Cut

Oh you fancy, huh?  Head over for lunch and take in the ambiance while teeth down in a monster burger. Their single patty burger is beast, and the double-patty version should come with a NSFW tag, as you’re essentially incapable of productivity for some time after.

Mother’s Office

The name brings me back to my favorite burger place in Los Angeles, Father’s Office. Coincidence? While some information remains a secret, what can be noted is that this place makes a delicious burger. Father’s Burger is a safe bet, however the french souvenir cream burger will catch you off guard…let it happen.

I am A burger

A small unassuming burger joint in the back streets of Hongdae, this place is a delight.  Their Garlic Cheese Bacon Burger with a side of cajun fries will have you walking out of their with a whole new pep-in-your-step.  Go with the 200g, you’ve come all this way, and man those bad boys are juicy.

Burger Joint

The gem of Le Parker Meridien NYC has made it’s way to Seoul.  Tucked down in the depths below Hyundai department store, this burger spot packs a mean punch for it’s price point.  Doublecheese me please!

Phat Diner

Across from Samsung’s Digital City,  this burger place it’s aptly named. A juicy lamb chorizo burger with tzatziki sauce, American cheese and Cajun fries?! While this Greek/NOLA cultural alignment offered some confusion, the deliciousness was crystal clear. An afternoon nap may be required.

Location: Suwon

Guilty Pleasure

This is a one-pony show. This burger is both delicious, and crippling. Stacked tall as a hand, this trouble-maker retains surprisingly good structural integrity – though for naught as it’s nearly impossible to deal with, so good luck.  Signature add-on is the hash-brown on top.   Sliders are also a nice choice, as they are coated with truffle oil, and truffle oil = happiness.

Locations: Itaewon

9 Ounce Burger

Simple little neighborhood burger spot with a focus on high quality wagyu beef. While only select burgers stand up to the names claim in ounces,  all burgers hold their own in flavor. A number of the creative flavor combinations are solid, like the California, but you can’t go wrong with the signature “9 Ounce.”

Best Pizza in Seoul

Pizza…oh so many types, and all with their delicious advantages.  While Seoul may not has mastered NYC’s gourmet slices, it does offer a number of good locations that are well worth your time (and calories).

Bonny’s Pizza Pub

This is a pizza joint,  not a fancy date spot.  Good pizza that’s a bit heavy on the cheese,  which you can get as a whole or by the slice.  Tons of bottle beers to choose from,  and a great place to catch a game.  The Snowden, Carnivore or classic pepperoni are all good ways to go.  Half-and-half is also an option for those that can’t decide.
Location: Itaewon

Brick Oven New York Pizzeria

New York pizza is just better than anywhere else.  It’s a fact.  It’s science.  The team at Brick Oven brings real New York pizza flavor to Seoul.  They have a number of appetizers (garlic fries and buffalo wings are popular),  but the pizza is what you’re there for.
Location: Yeoksam

Gino’s NY Pizza

Another great addition to the Seoul pizza scene, Gino’s offers a proper slice of New York style pizza.  And what makes good NY style pizza? Many things, but mainly the crust, and this place nails it.  Plenty of good options to select from, so go with a large half-and-half of…whatever actually, all work. Great ambiance as well.

Location: Itaewon

Pizzeria D’Buzza

It’s a safe bet that any time you’ll arrive,  there will be a line. But as my mom would say,  if there’s a line, there’s a reason (though local line culture wrecks this logic).  In this case it’s not some operational bottleneck,  it’s because the pizza is damn good. Lots of variety in their toping combinations.  Buzza Classica and Margherita di bufala are safe bets.

The Pizza Peel

If we’re talking about proper American style pizza at reasonable prices, this place may arguably do it the best in Seoul.  The secret may be that the Pizza Peel employs some proper pizza ovens.  Go with a standard pepperoni,  this place had no need to try and be fancy, but if you want to mix it up, Buffalo Ranch or Chicken Pesto also work.
Location: Itaewon

Paulie’s Brick Oven Pizzeria

Big pizzas with quality choices, with half-and-half being a great route. The BBQ chicken is a nice angle, especially dipped in a bit of ranch (which they have), oh so good!  Plenty of other add-ons as well, from fries to wings…all wash down well with an assortment of draft brews. Welcome to town Paulie, it’s good to have you.
Location: Gwanghwamun

Spacca Napoli

If you’re a fan of some delicious and chewy pizza dough,  you’ll love it.  A small place,  maybe 10 tables,  but pizzas are excellent and hand crafted by their owner.  Expect a wait,  but definitely give it a try.
Location: Hapjeong

Maddux Pizza

Finally, a place to focus on just tasty slices!  The open-air kitchen taps into some fresh local ingredients, allowing for pizza-fragrance bliss (your clothes may remind you later).  Maddux pizza slices don’t mess around either, they are large and tasty.  While many choices exist, staples of any pizza joint is where this place shines, so make sure to order a Margarita and standard pepperoni, and then then go nuts on one of their many other choices. Great place to share and sample.
Location: Itaewon

Vera Pizza Napoli

Having lived next door to a Vera Pizza Napoli across the seas, finding one in the streets of Hannam was quite the treat. How is the pizza so good? Is it the fact that the pizzas are baked from oak firewood in the brazier of volcanic stones directly imported from Vesuvio Mt. in Italy, or is it just some darn good pizza-magicians in the house? Either way Vera Pizza Napoli knows their pies.
Location: Hannam

Trevia Pizza di Roma

While on the higher end and a bit non-traditional,  this square format pizza keeps the taste buds happy.  These thin crust pizzas are cooked with just the right level of crisp.  Both the Quattro Cheese and the Siciliano are good routes to go.

Best Chicken Wings in Seoul

Best chicken wings in SeoulNo one in their right mind will dare question Seoul’s fried chicken, but buffalo wings?? Does anyone out there know how to whip-up up some tasty western-style wings? While not in heavy supply,  a few great places exist if you know where to look.

Napkin Please

Proper dirty American food. Many things are good here,  but the buffalo wings take top notch.  Tasty  buffalo style wings (and a few other flavors),  with good blue cheese dipping sauce to pair. Great selection of draft beers as well to wash them down with.

Bull & Barrel

This place gets right down into it.  It has all the necessities one may need…foosball, darts, tons of beer, and of course plenty of wings.  They have a broad selection of flavors to choose from and pretty reasonable prices (specials on Wednesday’s).  The place even has poutine which is hard not to respect.

Vatos Urban Tacos

It might seem crazy what I’m about to say (cue Pharrell) but Vatos Honey Tequila Chicken Wings are epic. So many flavors,  topped of with some jalapeños and tasty blue cheese dipping sauce.  An amazing Korean – Mexican fusion that need to be experienced.  Golf clap to the mastermind behind these.

Scrooge Pub

This is a proper pub by any standards, equipped with beer, a load of TV’s to watch a game, and you guessed it… wings! Scrooge Pub has a variety of flavors, with the honey garlic wings making some real mouth magic.  One thing it surpasses anyone in town on is certainly in the heat category, with there “insane” option aptly named.  These hot wings are not your standard touch of heat, we are talking a real test-of-manhood level of fire.  You’ve been warned.  Stop by on Tuesday’s for extra good deals.

Locations: Itaewon

Rocky Mountain Tavern

Another busy pub scene with a great selection of nearly everything the heart needs…beers, burgers, games to watch, dogs to pet, and of course what they are know for, wings!  The “Killer Ouch” is just that, but the fine establishment offers many more tasty flavors.  The creamy ranch is one of the best in Seoul, you could probably dip a tire in there and it would taste good. Brownie points to RMT for carrying poutine as well, you guys rock!

Locations: Itaewon

Brick Oven New York Pizzeria

You came here for the pizza, no question, but Brick Oven also offers some tasty wings to to act as a taste bud warm-up before the main event.  Only one style of wings, buffalo, accompanied by some quality ranch (which is also excellent to dip your pizza in – yes I said it).

Best Mexican Food in Seoul

Best Mexican in SeoulIt’s pretty clear to say that the Mexican food influence on Seoul is far from overwhelming.  But like Mexico, Korea know’s it’s way around spicy food, and a few local restaurants have done their loco amigos a solid.

Don Charly

If there can only be one…this is it.  Authentic, delicious and far from pretentious, Antojeria Don Charly makes you forget that you’re sitting half way around the world from Mexico.  A small shutter of happiness may roll through your body upon entering, this is normal.  Tacos are yummy, chips, salsa and guacamole are quite solid as well.  Relax and get your fat-on.

Location: Itaewon

Coreanos Kitchen

Coreanos does an excellent job of taking Mexican food and adding the right amount of Korean flair. Basically trust the highlights on the menu, they aren’t lying.  Three wise fries, Kimchi BKB burrito, and the tacos…oh the tacos!!! While Craftsworks pilsners have probably been treating you just fine throughout this epic munch, don’t be afraid to cheat a bit at the end, and wash things down with a nice chocolate cookie cake.

Locations: ItaewonApgujeong Rodeo

Vatos Urban Tacos

Another great fusion of Mexican meets Korean, Vatos Urban Taco has a diverse menu that can accommodate most crowds.  Yes, we love them for their Mexican food, delicious shimp tacos, quality burritos, and their carnitas (insert basically anything here) are excellent.  But Vatos also has some sleepers on the menu, like its Kimchi Fries (again, carnitas), chicken wings, etc etc.  Margaritas are top around town, and they even have Corona-a-Ritas.  Keep doin’ your thing Vatos.

Locations: SinsaItaewon, Jamsil

Everyone loves the underdog, and tucked back off Noksapyeong-daero, this place brings some real authentic flavor to the table.  Basically all the tacos are a win, so get a mix…though tongue and intestine are not for the faint of heart.  Guacamole is also very quality there, so don’t miss it.  True, portions can be a bit small, and they like aren’t afraid to throw some cilantro into the mix, but this place is solid so stop your complaining.

Location: Itaewon

Villa Guerrero

This place has a real hole-in-the-wall Mexican feel. It literally sells out of meat (some basic supply and demand economics that need to be solved), with it’s loyal customer base testing the limits of stomach capacity.  The menu is purist, strictly tacos. They specialize in carnitas (tongue, shoulder, skin) and chorizo. These tacos are the best in Seoul (mic dropped).

On The Border

OK, before you start judging… is this place authentic? No, of course not, it’s Tex-Mex at best.  While the price point is a bit steep for value, let’s be honest and admit this place does more than a few things right. Basically you can make a whole meal off the chips and salsa and be happy (I think I could drink it), but if you’re venturing into that big menu, the sampler brings a nice mix to the table.  They do a nice job with the steak Fajitas as well.

Gusto Taco

Gusto Taco offers up some true mexican-style tacos in which you can really taste the freshness.  Both the chicken and pork tacos wrapped in some homemade tortillas are easy wins.  The guacamole wasn’t too shabby either. What was even more surprising was that the burger was even good (maybe some future considerations for the burger list)! Tasty tacos, great service…kudos to Gusto on his establishment.

Best Western BBQ in Seoul

Slicing BrisketLet the battle begin!  To be fair,  their are likely too many good Korean BBQ joints to do this list any proper justice, no waistline could test them all. As for non Korean style however,  a few heavyweights are all you need to know.

Manimal Smokehouse

Yes. Win. Love. Need. Just some thoughts likely to enter your mind as you take in the menu. Pulled pork,  ribs and brisket are all great. Another shocker was the chicken,  which is not usually the main draw of a BBQ place like this, but something they got down right. Also do yourself a big favor and get the Mac and cheese.
Location: Itaewon

Linus’ Bama Style BBQ

There’s a reason it always has a wait. Terrific spot to plop down with friends and do some serious work. Two person platter serving up pulled pork,  brisket,  and a number of sides will take good care of you, though it never hurts to throw in an order of the Mac and cheese balls. Great BBQ sauce as well (retail please).
